Online event: A discussion about devolution in Scotland & Wales

The think tanks PolicyWISE and Enlighten are delighted to invite you to join a discussion about devolution in Scotland and Wales and what the nations might learn from one another in the coming years.

Both Wales and Scotland face potentially disruptive elections in May. The polls suggest Labour could relinquish control of the Senedd to Plaid Cymru. The rise of Reform threatens to upend traditional voting habits in both nations.

What are the consequences of the elections likely to be? Has devolution been as effective as it might have been over the past quarter century? What would better co-operation look like between parties, governments, and parliaments? Where are the similarities and differences in the policy challenges the institutions face? What is the state of relations between the devolved nations and Westminster? And what can each learn from the other’s experience?

Our cross-nation panel of former party leaders and ministers will comprise:

Adam Price, Leader of Plaid Cymru from 2018 to 2023 and MS for Carmarthen East and Dinefwr.

Kezia Dugdale, leader of Scottish Labour from 2015 to 2017 and Associate Director of the Centre for Public Policy at the University of Glasgow.

Paul McLennan, SNP Minister for Housing from 2023 to 2025 and MSP for East Lothian.

Lee Waters, Welsh Labour’s Deputy Minister for Climate Change from 2021 to 2024 and MS for Llanelli.

The conversation will be chaired by Chris Deerin, Director of Enlighten.

This event will be held via Zoom on Thursday 15 January starting at 1.00 pm. Login details will be provided on RSVP to events@enlighten.scot
